Keynotes

T hough this information has already been published in the keynotes section, I am uploading this again in the blog section following quite a few enquiries.

The following topics can be elucidated and discussed at various levels for specific age groups, genders, professions and purposes as per requirement.   Examples from mythology, history and literature will be used to put across the idea effectively. Strategies, solutions and options to deal with problems will be the mainstay of each talk. Games, role play and activities will be included when conducting the sessions as workshops.

TEACHING

An Ode to My Music Teacher

When my music teacher taught me the Sargam when I was a mere child, she had asked me to visualize them as a set of steps, which I had to ascend and descend. Just like the steps, the musical notes would remain static in their designated places and if I needed access over them, I had to reach out to them. She probably said it just once and may have said it to put across the point, but somehow the image has remained with me ever since. I have always imagined that each step represented a Swara.  I would step, skip, linger or bounce over them in accordance to the lessons taught. Thus I practiced Sarali varase, Genti varase, Dhatu varase and Alankaras  mentally when I paced and hopped up and down the stairs without particularly going up or down. All the jumping left me breathless especially when I tried going through them in the second and third speed. Not to mention, that I would be reprimanded for being so very restless. Now I find it amazing that I had not divulged what was going on in my mind or explained all the ascending and descending. Though the exhausting exercise did not impact the quality of my singing then, I learned the basic difference between constants and variables at an impressionable age. I was able to understand the distinct distances between musical notes which helped me hone my skills as the years passed. However what fascinates me to this day is the fact that whenever I catch myself alone on a staircase, I immediately assign them the Sargam in a raga that catches my fancy at that point of time and  hum a pattern of notes in my mind and step accordingly. In other words, I can never go past a set of stairs without thinking of music.

Interestingly, it was my music teacher who had helped me understand Algebra several years before it was introduced to me in school when she explained the concept of octaves in music. She said in passing (again) that the first note of the Sargam determined the placements of the other Swaras. Whenever, I had to find the value of “x”, in an equation, I could not help thinking of it as the “Aadhar Shadja”. Learning sets and drawing Venn diagrams was cake walk to me in school because I had been taught about complete octaves which paved way to mini ragas with  a few notes, the similarities and differences in the notes between ragas which made them distinct . I could not shake off music when I was taught   the concept of 360 degrees around a point which can be segmented. I was well aware of the raga chart akin to a pie chart into the 72 major ragas were segmented. Sums to be solved on Permutations and combinations seemed easier when I converted marbles or balloons into musical notes. I have never been able to overcome the sense of déjà vu in the mathematics classes.

When I reflect over the deep seated influence on thinking that my music teacher had over me besides helping me to learn music I realise that teachers do have the knack of influencing you for eternity!

Bird’s Eye View of Sanskrit

To many of us, the word “Sanskrit” suggests a wonderful language which belonged to a hoary past. We know that India is the land in which this wonderful language originated. Ancient Indians were well versed in the language. The Vedas, the Puranas, the classical texts – The Ramayana and the Mahabharata were written in this language and they have been recognised and revered by people across the globe even to this day. The Indian way of living, its ethos and flavour is directly related to the language and what it has to offer by way of classics and literature. Just about every subject under the sun has been covered in one way or another in some of these texts. Linguists and scientists marvel at the precise nature of this language. The inherent binary code of the letters in the language has been discovered to be compatible for codification and for use by computers. All the contemporary Indian languages have been derived from this source, with the exception of Tamil.

This ancient language has a hoary past running into millenniums hence it is very difficult to arrive at some consensus about the origin of the language. Traditionally, Indians, believe that the language was initially used by our pantheon of 33 crore gods to communicate amongst themselves. Hence Sanskrit is also called Daiva Bhasha or the lingo of the gods. Later on, the language was gifted to mankind by goddess Saraswathi and hence Sanskrit is also known as Geervana Bharathi.

The fairy tale like origin of the language apparently had few takers amongst the hardcore linguists across the globe who think that Sanskrit evolved from Prakruth derived from the sounds of nature. They believe that long, long ago when man evolved into an intelligent being, he found the necessity to communicate his thoughts, feelings and ideas. He probably played “dumb charades” and sometimes took to hieroglyphics to put across his thoughts and aped sounds from nature in order to communicate. Over a period of time the language was organised and honed till it reached the point of perfection. The phonology, syntax, vocabulary and grammar of the language has the world awestruck with its finesse and completeness.

When an ancient language has so many feathers in its cap (or is it crown?) one would think that the language is on velvet and nothing can ever go wrong in its kingdom. Yet sadly enough, we have come a long away from such a pristine state of affairs. A brief study of the history of the country will reveal that, we as a nation have been introduced to varied cultures and civilisation over the course of history. The invaders left their stamp behind that influenced our way of living and thinking to a large extent. Lots of factors changed. Yet the change cannot be considered complete as we have retained the basic Indian values despite innumerable onslaughts. Perhaps it is at this juncture, we should recognise the power of the Sanskrit language which helped us to carry forward the basis of Indian-ness for it has been the cementing factor which has sustained the spirit in the oral and written format.

All of you are perhaps aware that Sanskrit is one of the most ancient languages in the world which is complete in its own way. Have you ever wondered about the origin of this language? As students, whenever you are taught something new or asked to learn a novel concept, you may have found yourself wondering whoever started it all. Some of your questions may have interesting answers and some may not.

If you have ever wondered about Sanskrit, well, there is a very interesting tale about the beginning of the language in our ancient texts. It is said that lord Shiva lapsed into one of his ecstatic danced to the beat of the Dumroo, a small percussion instrument (see picture alongside) and several variations of sounds flowed out of the instrument. It is said these letters were gathered in this order and used as the basic letters of the language and were represented in the ‘Devanagari’ script.

The sound and the symbols of the language were effectively used by the people to compile a comprehensible vocabulary and record their observations and inferences in the form of Vedas which are called Rig, Sama, Yajur and Atharvana Vedas. A close reading of the Vedas will reveal that they not only give guidelines to lead a life that emphasises on living in harmony with nature and fellow human beings but also have a wealth of information on just about every topic under the sun.

A few copies of the Vedic literature was etched on processed palm leaves by scholarly students for reference, but most of them committed the entire text to memory and passed on the texts orally to their juniors. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why, we do not have too many copies of the entire text available as on date.

Many a time some words were lost in mis-pronunciation and lapse of memory. In such cases, people resorted to the basic rules of grammar which helped them to supplement the blank with an appropriate word. This procedure is almost akin to solving a crossword puzzle where you have a clue of both the meaning of the word and the number of letters in the answer word.

Our ancestors had evolved a wonderful way of understanding and learning a language. Panini an ancient grammarian who is believed to have lived in eighth century BC formulated 3964 “Aphorisms” also known as “Sutras” each running into a word or a phrase. If a student of Sanskrit grammar learned these sutras by heart, his language was sure of becoming impeccable. These sutras dealt with different aspects of language like grammar, analogy, vocabulary, communicative language among other things which facilitated the learning of the language almost faultlessly.

The fact that there have been little or no revisions in the basic rules of the language ever since reflect on the level of perfection that had been attained by the grammarian. The famous Vedas, Puranas, epics, classics and even contemporary literature have been written in the language which subscribes to these rules. Perhaps, it is features like consistency and the completeness of the language that keep it going on till this day despite so many setbacks.

Mathematics to Simplify Complications

While uneducated people, who run small-time businesses, are able to calculate quite accurately sans the calculator, the urban students are subjected to the travails of learning the multiplication tables by heart.
The student clan can be broadly divided into two groups with respect to mathematics; the ones who adore it and the others who despise the subject for whatever it is worth. Similarly teachers of mathematics are perhaps the only people in the teaching community who are either revered or most detested by students and there has been no middle path in this trend for eons.
Indian mathematical fame
When one wonders what could be wrong about the subject or the system, the reality around us shows a different picture. Indians have been acclaimed for their mathematical talents at the global level. No matter what we have to say about the education system of India, the fact remains that Indian students have all along been appreciated across the globe for their mathematical skills which has been ingrained in them right from their formative years. For the ones who are already remarking, the prized students are but the cream of the educated, which is a miniscule percentage in the overall picture of the country’s overwhelming population.
All around
Stop for a moment to observe around you, it will not be difficult to notice that everyone you deal with throughout the day is adept in the subject, specifically arithmetic besides algebra. The milkman, the bus conductor, the vegetable seller, the cobbler, the child next door and even the beggar you are charitable to, appear to know the rudiments of the subject with perhaps the exception of the mentally challenged who live in a world of their own.
The basic chapters like fractions, decimals, percentage, ratio and proportion are used in everyday life very unconsciously. Even uneducated people, who run small-time businesses or work as labourers, are able to calculate quite accurately sans the calculator. They have an uncanny way of dealing with numbers mentally most of the times.
It is high time teachers of mathematics put across this fact to the unwilling student who live in the eternal dread of the subject.
Urban paranoia
Urban parents who are paranoid about their wards not doing very well in the future, spend a fortune on their children by investing in tuition classes, abacus courses and Vedic mathematics lessons, in the hope of seeing their children do better and eventually score a centum in the subject. Students are subjected to the travails of learning the multiplication tables by heart and working out tons of sums on note paper with the intention of making them hone their skills. One cannot disown the fact that these measures do help the willing learner, but it is the unwilling scholar who causes anxiety to the teacher.
The pictures alongside which were received as e-mail forwards, speak in volumes about the apathy that is resident in the minds of the students who are either making sincere attempts to follow the instructions given by the teacher or just cannot take a ‘problem’ any further out of sheer disgust.
Teachers of mathematics will assure you that while their lives are not one without their shares of joys and sorrows of teaching the subject, one cannot certainly discount the subject as drab because some of their students fill the papers with a rip-roaring sense of humour quite inadvertently.
To many adults, particularly parents and teachers, such youngsters become a perennial source of worry and concern. They feel that their children will be doomed to a bleak future if they are not adept at unravelling the anonymities of the prescribed syllabus of the subject.
It is high time these parents and teachers realise that all people eventually learn their arithmetic sooner or later. If youngsters are able to grapple the nuances of logarithms, trigonometry or analytical geometry, good for them but it does not really matter in the least as long as they have understood the basics of mathematics. This knowledge will see them through a long way in life. In fact entrance examinations across the globe which include mathematics as one of the tests even at very high levels do not test beyond the basics where the questions are sometimes presented in an oblique manner.
Once a student is thorough with the basics, he or she will be ready to learn advanced mathematics which is nothing but a compilation and combination of the rudiments of the subject per se. Hence it is important to know that there is a latent knowledgeable mathematical soul in everyone of us which is in various stages of awareness. Each one of us has a lucid idea of concepts such as quantity, structure, space, and change which are nothing but tenets of mathematics otherwise mankind would not have progressed thus far.
If teachers of mathematics are able to put across Gudder’s idea to students that “mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple” maybe life will become simpler.
